Unintended consequences: Does it matter if we keep score?

Last year some of us pastors attended a conference called the D6 Conference. The subject matter of the conference centered on family ministry. One of the guest speakers was a man by the name of Dr. Tim Elmore. Tim  is the founder and president of Growing Leaders (www.growingleaders.com). It's an Atlanta-based non-profit organization created to develop emerging leaders.Elmore trains middle school, high school and college students with the skills they need to become authentic leaders with huge potential to transform society. He has spoken to over 250,000 students and faculty, he has written over 20 books, he teaches leadership to Chick-fil-A, Inc, Home Depot, the Kansas City Royals, the University of Texas football team, among a list of others and has worked along side internationally recognized leadership expert John Maxwell for the past 25 years.

I am personally passionate about leadership and I am also a numbers guy and Elmore makes it a point to share facts and statistics in his talks, books and blogs. So, I have been subscribing to his blogs and tweets.

This particular blog I thought was very interesting and compelling for us parents. The article is called "How Adults Are Stealing Ambition From Kids". In today's world of not keeping score in sports, everyone gets a trophy just for participating, and we can't let our kids fail at school or home, read what Elmore has to say about the unintended consequences us parents now face as a result and some advice on what we can do about it.
