Merry Faith Talk!

A New Beginnings Christmas Past
I love this old photo from New Beginnings Christmas Pasts (2006, I think) Partly because I see so many of these young faces as young adults now (Mary - Tyler Butler Paxton was married a few weeks ago at New Beginnings).
This photo should remind all parents that the time to influence there kids faith is diminishing. And to seize each opportunity to grow disciple's faith in their children. Christmas time may be the easiest time of the year to start having weekly “Faith Talks.” There is enough theological significance, enough Christmas stories, enough Christmas memories, and enough time off that every family could have a Faith Talk this Christmas season. What is a “Faith Talk,” you ask?
Dr. Timothy Paul Jones wrote a blog this week that reminded me that it doesn’t really matter what you call a “Faith Talk.”
  • Family Night is what the Sallee Family called it.
  • Berg Family Fun Night is what Jeff Berg call their faith talk.
  • Family Worship is what the Puritans called it (complete with hymnals and liturgy).
  • Unnamed TimeMatt Fowler and Sankie Lynch prefer the “Unnamed Time.” They both intentionally plan time for Faith Talks, but haven’t settled in on just the right thing to call it.
  • Family Time
  • Family Faith-training
  • Family Altar

Jones says, “The name that you assign to faith-talks is negotiable; the practice behind the name is not. …The purpose of faith-talks is to restore Christian parents to their God-ordained role as teachers of God’s Word in their children’s lives.”
New Beginnings Church is committed to partnering with parents to assist them in leading their kids to become fully devoted followers of Christ.
Every parent will influence the faith. The question is will they influence them toward healthy, missional, redemptive, gospel-centered faith? Or will they influence them toward obligatory, shame produced, tired, guilt-centered faith? Here is a challenge issued by Dr. Jones: Parents choose a time once each week to lead a family faith-talk. The church encourages the parents, holds them accountable, and provides them with resources for this weekly faith-talk.
Below I have linked hundreds of ideas for family Christmas activities. Some are bible related and others are not. There maybe no such thing as a failed Faith Talk. Even if you kids snicker and mock you for trying, they will remember that God’s Word and the Gospel of Jesus is important to you.And they will remember that forever.
